How to Get to Amed, Bali: From the Airport, Ubud, Canggu and the Gili Islands

Amed is a peaceful stretch of fishing villages on the north-east coast of Bali, in the Karangasem regency, below Mount Agung. It is famous for diving, snorkelling and slow island life — far from the traffic of the south. Here is how to get to Amed and how long it takes.

From Bali airport (Ngurah Rai, DPS) to Amed

Amed is about 2.5–3.5 hours by car from Ngurah Rai International Airport, depending on traffic and the time of day. The easiest option is a private driver: comfortable, air-conditioned and door to door. Taxis and ride-hailing apps also work from the airport. Arriving late at night? The roads are quieter and the drive is usually faster.

From Ubud to Amed

From Ubud the drive takes roughly 2–2.5 hours through rice fields and villages of East Bali. It is easy to add a stop or two on the way (see below).

From Canggu, Seminyak or Kuta

From the south-west coast plan for about 3–3.5 hours, more in heavy traffic. Leaving early in the morning makes a big difference.

From the Gili Islands or Lombok

Fast boats connect Amed with the Gili Islands and Lombok. The crossing usually takes around 1.5–2 hours, depending on the operator and sea conditions. Schedules change with the season, so book in advance and check the weather.

Getting around Amed

Amed is a long coastal road with small bays: Jemeluk, Bunutan, Lipah and more. Most visitors rent a scooter or use local drivers. Our resort is in the heart of Amed, close to the beach, restaurants and shops — and our dive center organises transport to the dive sites, including Tulamben and the USAT Liberty wreck.

Places to visit on the way to Amed

  • Tirta Gangga — the royal water palace with fountains, ponds and koi fish, about 30 minutes from Amed.
  • Lempuyang Temple — the famous “Gates of Heaven” with views of Mount Agung.
  • Taman Ujung — a peaceful water palace near Amlapura.
  • Mount Agung — Bali’s highest volcano; sunrise treks are possible with a local guide.

When is the best time to visit Amed?

Amed is a year-round destination. The dry season (roughly April to November) brings the calmest seas and the best visibility for diving in Amed. The rainy months are greener, quieter and still have many sunny mornings.
