USAT Liberty Wreck in Tulamben: The Complete Dive Guide
History, depth, marine life and the best time to dive Bali’s most famous wreck.

Amed is a string of quiet fishing villages on the north-east coast of Bali, at the foot of Mount Agung. Under the surface it hides some of the most varied diving on the island: calm coral gardens, steep walls, a shallow wreck, artificial reefs and critter-filled black sand. Most of the best dive sites in Amed are shore dives or a short ride on a traditional jukung boat — and all of them are minutes from our resort.
The heart of diving in Amed. A calm, bright bay with healthy hard corals, clownfish, parrotfish and often turtles. It is perfect for first dives, Discover Scuba Diving, freediving and snorkelling.
Where the coral garden ends, the reef turns into a wall covered in gorgonians and soft corals. With a gentle current it becomes an easy drift dive. Keep an eye on the blue for white-tip and black-tip reef sharks.
A small wreck lying in only about 5 metres of water in a sheltered bay. It is overgrown with soft corals and sea fans and is a favourite of macro photographers: pygmy seahorses, ghost pipefish and leaf fish all live here. Shallow enough for snorkellers and freedivers.
An artificial reef of concrete pyramids built in the 1990s and now covered in coral. Turtles, blue-spotted stingrays and big schools of fusiliers are regulars, and reef sharks and trevally often pass by in the late afternoon.
A calm bay with a beautiful shallow reef, great for critter hunting, training dives and snorkelling. Turtles are often spotted here.
A black-sand slope in front of Amed village and one of the area’s best muck dives. Slow down to find frogfish, seahorses and nudibranchs between the coral bommies. It is also an excellent night dive.
Dramatic slopes usually dived as drifts. Schooling trevally, barracuda, turtles and purple soft corals make these sites a favourite for experienced divers.
At Bali’s easternmost point, currents bring spectacular soft corals, gorgonians, big boulders and lots of fish — with a chance of eagle rays and reef sharks. These sites are dived only on the right tide with an experienced guide.
Just up the coast lies the USAT Liberty wreck, Bali’s most famous dive site. Most of our guests combine Amed and Tulamben during their stay.
Diving in Amed is possible all year round. Water temperature is usually 26–29 °C and visibility is often 15–30 m. The dry season (roughly April to November) brings the calmest conditions. Mornings are typically the calmest time of the day.
